Sweet and Saltines

When I see a recipe for sweet and salty I just have to go for it.  Four ingredients and you are in sweet and salty heaven!

  • Cooking spray
  • 35 to 40 saltine crackers
  • 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips (1-1/3 cups)
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.

Line 1 large jelly-roll or sheet pan with foil, spray with non-stick spray and arrange the saltines in a single layer.  In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar together and boil for about 5 minutes.  Remove from the heat and pour over the crackers, covering them evenly.

Put the pan into the oven and bake for 2 to 4 minutes, or until just bubbly, watching carefully.  Remove from the oven and pour the chocolate chips over the crackers, covering them evenly.

When the chips melt a bit, spread them over the crackers with a knife.
Transfer the pan to the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until completely cold.
They will form one big sheet.

Break up into pieces.
Store in an airtight container
These remind me of the candy I used to buy at Fanny Farmer's!
Since they have crackers in them, I think it's appropriate that we can also call them CRACK!
Highly addictive!
Enjoy!

  1. I have made something similar using graham crackers, and they are highly addictive. Making these in the fall and for the holidays. xo

  2. My family asks for me to make these for get-togethers. We call it chocolate crack. However, I add 1 teaspoon of vanilla to the butter/sugar misture after it has boiled (taking it off the heat first). Also, it doesn't require being put into the freezer when finished. They will set up fine without it by sitting on the counter to cool completely.

  3. My mom gave me this recipe and she called it homemade heath (but I do cool on the counter). My husband loves it and I used to make it every holiday but haven't made it in ages. I guess I better think about making it again soon!! Thanks for the post! Plus, you can come and break mine because they are never that neat :)

  7. I make these using graham crackers and instead of the chocolate chips I use a bag of Heath toffee bits and some mini chocolate chips. Very addictive.

    2. Try them with butterscoth morsels. Or a mix of chocolate and peanut butter.

  9. Ha! I was just about to say "I make these and love them," and it looks like I'm not the only one! My recipe calls for white sugar instead of brown. I might have to try the brown. Also, we like to sprinkle toppings on the chocolate such as chopped nuts, coconut, mini-M&Ms etc... Looks like from the comments above, there are many different options!Fun!
